Terra Ferma was started
by two local mountaineers of long-standing: Jeroni Garcímartin
and José Miguel García. We have been working for many
years on projects related to mountain sports, rural tourism and the
environment. Terra Ferma represents for both of us a milestone in
the course of this evolution. Terra Ferma allows us the chance to
live and work in the mountains. It is also a chance to make a modest
contribution to the preservation of our natural spaces and to the
social and economic development of our region.
The project which is Terra
Ferma has already won recognition. In April 99 we won first prize
in a prestigious competition that was looking for "New ideas
for promoting the local economy" and was run by the office of
rural development called CEDER Aitana. We were awarded this prize
because Terra Ferma has an important potential for integrating the
many aspects of sustainable
development in the area, and also because
of the value Terra Ferma places on our natural and cultural heritage.
Guíde and instructors:
This is a small company and we
both do most of the guiding and the course work ourselves. Working
in the mountains is what we like the most. However, we are very lucky
to have a number of experienced local guides who are expert mountaineers
and good friends, eager to join us when we need them. They are climbers
and hikers with a good knowledge of English. They also understand
and support the principles behind Terra Ferma as they have closely
experienced the evolution of mountain sports in our area and the reality
of the situation of their own villages.
Other Collaborators:
Being locals we have the opportunity
of knowing many interesting people from the different villages: farmers,
bee keepers, shepherds who show us special places and tell us amazing
stories about our culture and history which helps us to continually
improve our activities, making travelling with us a unique experience
.
